A difference of a few hundredths of a percentage point looks small on an ETF fee table. Over a long holding period, the difference compounds every year. The HowToBuyBTC Bitcoin ETP fee dataset, snapshot July 23, 2026, lists five selected U.S. spot Bitcoin products with annual fees from 0.19% to 0.25%.
This is a selected issuer-sourced snapshot, not a complete market list and not a recommendation.
What the annual fee means
An annual fund fee is deducted from product assets over time. Investors do not normally receive a separate bill, but the deduction reduces net asset value relative to a no-fee benchmark. It is different from brokerage commission, bid/ask spread, taxes, premium or discount to NAV, and account charges.
A simple fee-drag illustration
Consider $10,000 growing at an assumed 8% gross annual rate before product fees. This is a mathematical illustration, not a forecast.
- At a 0.19% annual fee, the model reaches about $21,212 after 10 years.
- At a 0.25% annual fee, it reaches about $21,095.
- The difference is roughly $118 after 10 years and about $498 after 20 years under the same assumption.
The gap grows because each year's fee also reduces the capital that could compound later.
Fee is not the only selection factor
A lower fee can be valuable, but investors should also inspect liquidity, bid/ask spread, tracking behavior, custody structure, issuer materials, brokerage availability and tax treatment. A product with a low annual fee but wider trading spread may be more expensive for a short holding period.
Use the ETP comparison table for the structured fields and verify the latest prospectus on the issuer's official site.
ETF exposure is not self-custody
A spot Bitcoin ETP gives brokerage-account price exposure. Shares cannot generally be withdrawn as Bitcoin to a personal wallet. Investors depend on the issuer, custodian, market structure and broker. Direct Bitcoin ownership has a different risk and responsibility profile.
The ETF versus self-custody guide explains why the choice depends on what Bitcoin is meant to do in the portfolio.
How to compare fee drag
- Use the same starting value and assumed gross return.
- Apply each product's current annual fee.
- Compare multiple holding periods.
- Add trading spread and brokerage costs separately.
- Recheck the official fee before purchase.
The ETP fee calculator can model different assumptions.
When the fee difference matters most
The annual fee becomes more important when the position is large, the holding period is long, and trading is infrequent. For a short holding period, brokerage spread and entry price can dominate. For a retirement account intended to remain invested for decades, recurring fee drag deserves more weight. The correct comparison therefore depends on both product structure and expected behavior.
Limitations
Fees can change. Waivers may expire. The selected products are not the entire market. Returns are uncertain, and a lower annual fee does not guarantee better total performance.
